Semi-Permanent Melbourne 2009

20 10 2009

Recently returned from an awesome design conference in Melbourne – Semi-Permanant 2009.

Held over two days, Semi-Permanant tuned out an impressive array of speakers representing a wide scope of creative industries including graphic designers, illustrators, photographers, ad agencies, magazine publishers and special effects studios.

Some of the stand-out speakers for me included:

Luke Lukas of Lifelounge who gave a candid look behind the scenes at his design process of creating amazing illustrative type-faces, as well as providing an insight into his studio and side projects.

Tara McPherson, a truly talented character illustrator from New York City, took us on a ride through her life-long creative journey,  providing a ton of inspiration to anyone with an ounce of illustrator in them.

Kieth Schofield from LA provided a few laughs with his edgy work for music videos for the likes of Fat Boy Slim. Check out his clip “Toe Jam’ here:  http://keithschofield.com/the-bpa/

Three Drunk Monkeys gave us the wrap on how their concept for TV show The Gruen Transfer thrust them into success and showcased their ensuing impressive portfolio of work.

Finally, US based Industrial Light and Magic, George Lucas’s visual effects team, wowed the audience with a mind-blowing portfolio of stunning movie animation work including vfx for  Star Wars, Star Trek, Transformers, ET, Terminator 2… the list goes on.  Very impressive stuff.

An inspiring conference for topping up the creative juices.  Also enjoyed catching up with Adelaide illustrator Gary Seaman as well as meeting many of the Melbourne design crew.  Looking forward to doing it all again next year!

PS – Top tip from the after party – check out The Croft when you’re next in Melbourne 😉

Photos to come.
